This modality can be thought about as traditional gliding, superficial massage strokes with a higher emphasis on relaxation instead of points of tension. The goal is to warm up muscle tissue, improve local circulation, and to let the body know that it is safe to relax.
Deep tissue has taken on several meanings over the years, but traditionally it focuses on, quite literally, getting deep into the muscle. Usually DTM is performed using very slow strokes with minimal lubricant. Sometimes this can require higher pressure, sometimes less. However, this is tailored to the client's needs and tolerance. DTM is often mixed with Trigger Point Therapy to target "knots" or points of adhered, tight muscles.
If you've ever noticed resistance in the movement of a limb or your head, MET is a great strategy to improve range of motion. For those getting into yoga for the first time or if you're getting back into it after a break, this technique can prove to be of great benefit. How it works is byvusing the therapist's resistance against your movement to create signals in the brain that relax targeted muscles into a stretch. While stretching is influenced by structural and muscular factors, utilizing this approach focuses on neural adaptation and can re-train the brain-muscle connection to accept a larger range of movement as safe.
